Passing the FMGE screening test is a major milestone for Foreign Medical Graduates who want to practice medicine in India. However, clearing FMGE is only one step in the licensing pathway. After passing the exam, graduates must complete document verification, obtain their FMGE pass certificate, apply to a state medical council, and complete the mandatory Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI).
This guide explains the complete process after passing FMGE, including official documentation, internship structure, and important requirements for registration in India.
Step 1: Receive FMGE Pass Certificate
After passing the FMGE screening test conducted by the National Board of Examinations, candidates are issued the FMGE Pass Certificate. During certificate collection, documents related to the foreign medical degree are verified.
Only after receiving the pass certificate can a candidate apply for internship registration through a State Medical Council.
Step 2: Apply for Provisional Registration in State Medical Council
FMGs must apply for provisional registration in the medical council of the state where they wish to complete internship. Each state medical council may have slightly different procedures, but the core document verification process remains similar.
Once the application and verification are completed successfully, the council grants provisional registration allowing the candidate to begin internship.
Step 3: Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI)
Foreign Medical Graduates must complete the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship in India before receiving permanent registration. The internship provides clinical exposure across major medical departments.
