Immediate Wound Management After Animal Bite

  • Wash the wound immediately with running water and soap for 10–15 minutes
  • Apply antiseptic (povidone-iodine / chlorhexidine)
  • Avoid primary suturing unless absolutely necessary

Animal bites are a medical emergency. Correct and timely administration of Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV), along with proper wound care, rabies immunoglobulin (RIG), and tetanus prophylaxis, is essential to prevent rabies — a uniformly fatal disease.

This page provides a clinically accurate ARV date calculator using the 0-3-7-28 intramuscular regimen, along with concise guidance for doctors, interns, and emergency care providers.

Rabies Exposure Categories

Category I – No Exposure

  • Touching or feeding animals
  • Licks on intact skin

Management: No ARV, No RIG

Category II – Minor Exposure

  • Nibbling of uncovered skin
  • Minor scratches without bleeding

Management: ARV required, RIG not required

Category III – Severe Exposure

  • Bites or scratches with bleeding
  • Licks on broken skin
  • Saliva exposure to mucosa (eye, mouth)

Management: ARV + RIG required (if not previously vaccinated)

Tetanus Prophylaxis in Animal Bite

  • Give TT/Td if vaccination status is unknown or last booster > 5 years ago
  • Give TIG for dirty wounds with incomplete or unknown immunization

ARV Regimen Used

This calculator follows the standard 0-3-7-28 intramuscular ARV regimen.
