Becks Triad - Cardiac tamponate | Flashcard

What is Beck's triad?
Collection of three medical signs associated with acute cardiac tamponade

What is a cardiac tamponade?
Compression of the heart due to accumulation of fluid in the pericardial sac

The pressure prevents the hearts ventricles from expanding fully

Why does cardiac tamponade cause hypotension?
The ventricles are unable to contract properly. This reduces cardiac output resulting in low blood pressure

Why does cardiac tamponade cause distended neck veins?
Due to the back up of fluid into the veins draining into the heart, especially the jugular veins.

Why does cardiac tamponade cause decrease heart sounds?
The suppressed heart sounds occur due to muffling effects of the sounds passing through the fluid surrounding the heart.

What is in becks triad?

● Distended neck veins
● Decreased heart sounds
● Hypotension
