The final year medicos at the Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dehradun have started a protest since Monday in opposition to the management's decision to abruptly raise the tuition and postpone the MBBS internship.
SGRR Medical College, which is located in Dehradun and is administered by private management, provides MBBS and PG medical programs.
The government raised the fees from Rs 5 lakhs per year to Rs 13 lakhs per year, a 150 percent increase.
The management quota students are required to pay fees in the amount of Rs. 37 lakh, as opposed to the State quota students who must submit Rs. 26 lakh. The college administration has also postponed the final-year students' internships, making it clear that it won't start unless they pay their debts in full.
In the meantime, some individuals are accused of assaulting MBBS students who were peacefully demonstrating outside Shri Mahant Indresh Hospital. DGP Ashok Kumar has already given the Senior Superintendent of Police Dehradun Dalip Singh Kunwar instructions to file a case against those individuals after taking note of the situation.
"On Tuesday, a group of 10 to 15 thugs who claimed to be Jhanda Mela followers damaged the tent where we had been holding our protest. Some of us suffered minor wounds as a result of their assaults on us and harassment of the female pupils "a student added.
Speaking on behalf of the SGRR Medical College, Bhupendra Raturi said: "The students signed an affidavit at the time of admission stating that they would be responsible for paying any arrears if the government modified the price structure. They are not permitted to present for it until all fees for the hostel, mess, and other expenses have been paid in full, according to the rules."
